Indonesia is Short of Approximately 733,000 Teachers for Public Schools
TIMESMALAYSIA, JAKARTA – The Ministry of Education and Culture mentioned that Indonesia was short of teachers in public schools and the number reached 733,000 teachers.
The number of teacher shortage was on all level of puclic school education from kindergarten, elementary school, junior high school, senior high school, and vocational high school.
“We have counted the shortage of teachers. Initially, there was shortage of 988,000 teachers. However, after we re-calculated it, there was redistribution calculation of teachers, multi-skilled teachers, and multi-leveled teachers, it turned out that the need for teachers in public school was 733,000 teachers,” General Director Task Executor of Teachers and Educational Staffs of Ministry of Education and Culture, Hamid Muhammad, in Jakarta, Friday (9/3/2018).
According to Hamid, they have informed the teacher shortage condition to the Ministry of Empowerment of State Apparaturs and Beaurocracy Reform (PAN-RB).
“But the state’s capacity will not be able to appoint all of them to become the candidates of civil government employees. I got information from an acquaintance in the Ministry of Empowerment of State Apparaturs and Beaurocracy Reform that the numbers of those who will be promoted to civil employees are one and a half times more than those who retire. For example, if there are 62,000 teachers retire, there will be approximately 93,000 civil government employees who are promoted. Half of the number is to cover the retired teachers,” Hamid explained.
Nevertheless, Hamid claimed that it was only a formulation. The exact allocation will be determined by the Ministry of Empowerment of State Apparaturs and Beaurocracy Reform and the Ministry of Finance.
“The allocation is determined by the Ministry of Empowerment of State Apparaturs and Beaurocracy Reform and the Ministry of Finance. It was because to appoint 100,000 teachers is equal to appoint 200,000 teachers in the past since it is needed to calculate the allowance support and other things,” he described.
In addition, Hamid also hoped that this year there will be appointment of productive teachers and can be realize this year. The Ministry of Education and Culture recorded the need for productive teachers reaches 94,553 teachers.
Referring to honorary teachers’ appointment, Hamid claimed that honorary employees have the equal opportunity to participate in the selection test of civil government employee candidates. Nevertheless, he admitted that there is no appointment priority for honorary teachers.
The Ministry of Empowerment of State Apparaturs and Beaurocracy Reform mentioned that the recruitment of civil government employee candidates will be held after the 2018 Local Leaders Election. (*)
